Narrative share

Narrative share is the proportion of a category's dominant explanatory frame that a given brand owns inside AI-generated answers, measuring whose story the model tells, not merely how often a brand is mentioned.

Also known as: narrative share, share of narrative

What Narrative Share Is

When an AI model answers a category question, such as “What’s the best project-management tool for agencies?” or “How do I choose a CRM?”, it doesn’t just list names. It builds an answer on a frame: a set of assumptions about what matters in the category, which problems are worth solving, and which brands represent the right solution. Narrative share measures how much of that frame a given brand owns.

A brand with high narrative share doesn’t just appear in the answer. Its language, its framing of the problem, and its implied criteria show up as the model’s own reasoning. A brand with low narrative share may still be cited, but inside someone else’s story, on someone else’s terms.

This is the core distinction narrative share enforces: mentions ≠ narrative. Being counted in an answer is a downstream symptom. Shaping the answer’s logic is the upstream cause.

Why It Matters for AI Search

AI engines don’t rank, they recommend. That recommendation is learned from a broader human-market consensus: the articles, forums, analyst reports, and community conversations that collectively establish what a category is and who leads it. Because AI is downstream of that consensus, a brand’s narrative share in the model reflects its narrative share in the market.

This means two brands can have identical mention counts in AI answers while occupying completely different strategic positions. One is being recommended from its own frame. The other is being cited as a footnote inside a competitor’s. Optimizing for mentions without measuring frame ownership means chasing a symptom while the cause goes unaddressed.

For AI search strategy, narrative share is therefore the metric that sits upstream of visibility, upstream of citations, and upstream of the recommendation itself.

How Mavel Treats Narrative Share

Mavel treats narrative share as the hero metric of AI search: the number that sits above mere presence tracking. Where other tools measure whether a brand appears in AI answers, Mavel’s orientation is toward whose frame the answer is built on, meaning the sources, language, and assumptions the model adopted before it generated a single word.

Because narrative is interpretive, not just countable, measuring narrative share requires pairing automated monitoring of AI answers with human-grade judgment about which frame is actually winning a category. A score alone doesn’t tell you whose story is being told. Mavel’s position is that understanding narrative share means reading the frame, tracing it to its market sources, and identifying specifically what to ship to move it. This turns an abstract share number into an actionable editorial decision.
